The Occupational Health Nurse positions are located in the Office of Medical Services and are physically located in the Harry S. Truman Building, SA-1 (Columbia Plaza), and George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center. Selectees may be assigned to the listed locations depending on the position. As a key component of the Occupational Health Program, the Occupational Health Nurse provides services to Foreign and Civil Service employees of the Department of State and family members of Foreign Service Officers preparing for assignments overseas. The Occupational Health Nurse interaction with employees is critical in maintaining and improving the health of the workforce. The Occupational Health Nurse contributes to a healthy and vibrant workforce by promotion of health and wellness, provision of nursing care and services, and provision of surveillance monitoring of employees for workplace illness or injuries.

    KEY REQUIREMENTS

The position descriptions for the three openings are as follows: 1). The incumbent of this position will serve as a Occupational Health Nurse for the Office of Medical Services, Travel and Immunization Clinic, who may rotate to the Harry S. Truman Building, SA-1 (Columbia Plaza), and George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center . The incumbent provides travel immunizations to US government employees going on official travel overseas in addition to medical care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses in the workplace. As a first responder, the Occupational Health Nurse may need to work alone and takes charge as the sole medical provider of potentially lifesaving assessment and medical care until local medical rescue services are able to arrive on site.

2). The incumbent of this position serves as an Occupational Health Nurse in the MED/DASHO Office. They are to assist in the planning, development, implementation and assessment of comprehensive protocols, programs and procedures for the delivery of specialized occupational health services tailored to disease prevention and health maintenance for both domestic and overseas employees for the Department of State. The incumbent is to provide OWCP case management and works on reasonable accommodation cases as a medical liaison. The incumbent is to recommend and implement medical monitoring programs for new and ongoing occupational exposures. The incumbent is to assist in the provision of education on specific occupational concerns as well as assisting with health promotion activities.

3). The incumbent of this position serves as a medical evacuation coordinator for the Office of Medical Services, Foreign Programs primarily in SA-1. The Nurse Consultant is responsible for the $10,000,000 per year obstetrical evacuation program, as it is Department of State that all pregnant participants in the Medical ICASS program are evacuated to the United States when medically indicated or within six weeks of their projected delivery date.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. (One year of nursing experience as a military corpsman that has been accepted by a State licensing body may be accepted in lieu of education at the GS-4 level). Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.  An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained. Note: For the Position of Occupational Health Nurse advertised for the MED/DASHO Office, the candidate for the position must have also completed certification as a COHN through ABOHN (American Board of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc.).

IN ADDITION to meeting the basic entry qualifications requirements listed above, the applicant MUST have 1 year of full time experience at the GS 11 level performing work that is close or similar to the work of this job, which includes reacting to life threatening situations (i.e. providing emergency assessment for acute life threatening illness or injuries in the workplace); independently evaluating and assessing medical conditions, injuries, or concerns of employees; applying health care standards, and expert medical technical knowledge to complex conditions; possessing a broad knowledge of preventive health assessment, and having extensive knowledge of immunization requirements for travel anywhere in the world
