This announcement is for full time, paid clerical employees for Summer 2012. - Summer clerical employees serve any time between May 2012 and August 2012.

The Summer Clerical Program offers U.S. citizen students the opportunity to get firsthand experience supporting the work of U.S. Foreign Policy in a clerical or administrative position.

Students from all academic background and majors are encouraged to apply.

Key Requirements

To apply, you must be:


  • A U.S. citizen.

  • Age 16 or older.

  • A degree-seeking student (diploma, degree, vocational or technical certificate) enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution (high school, college, university, etc.).   Half-time is defined by the educational institution.

  • In good academic standing -a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

  • Able to obtain, and maintain, a security clearance.


Note:  Students must be continuing their studies the semester immediately following their summer clerical appointment.

Duties and responsibilities vary according to the office of assignment, but will be primarily of a clerical or administrative nature.  The incumbent will perform a full range of clerical and administrative support functions that may include, but are not limited to:

Receiving telephone calls and visitors and referring them to the appropriate individuals;

Performing office automation work which requires the use of software applications and computer equipment;

Scheduling appointments, meetings, and conferences;

Photocopying and assembling reports and briefings;

Preparing various documents such as reports, correspondence, statistical charts, and other related records; and,

Receiving, filing, and distributing office documents.

Applicants must have the required experience or education as
described below and meet any selective factors when specified.

Grade 1:
        There are no general or specialized experience or
        education requirements for this grade level.  In order to
        be eligible, you must be enrolled as a student and be at
        least 16 years of age prior to beginning work.

Grade 2:
        1. You have three or more months of general experience
           performing progressively responsible
           clerical/administrative work.
        
        or

        2. You have obtained a high school diploma or the
           equivalent.
   
Grade 3:
        1. You have six or more months of general experience
           performing progressively responsible
           clerical/administrative work.

        or

        2. You have completed at least 1 year (30 semester hours or
           45 quarter hours) of education above the high-school
           level in an accredited business, secretarial or
           technical school, junior college, college, or
           university.

        or

        3. You have a qualifying combination of education and
           experience.  To ensure your combination of
           education and work experience will meet the minimum GS-
           3 grade level qualifications, you must determine what
           percent of the 6-month work qualification factor your
           work experience represents and what percent of the 1-
           year (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) education
           requirement you have completed.  As an example: 3
           months of clerical experience would be equal to 50% of
           the work experience qualification.  15 semester credit
           hours would be equal to 50% of the educational
           qualification.  Combined, they would equal 100% of the
           qualification requirement for the GS-3 grade level
.

Grade 4:
        1. You have one or more year(s) of general experience
           performing progressively responsible
           clerical/administrative work.

        or

        2. You have completed at least 2 years (60 semester hours
           or 90 quarter hours) of education above the high-school
           level in an accredited business, secretarial or
           technical or vocational school, junior college,
           college, or university.

        or

        3. You have a qualifying combination of education and
           experience.  To ensure your combination of
           education and work experience will meet the minimum GS-
           4 grade level qualifications, you must determine what
           percent of the 12-month work qualification factor your
           work experience represents and what percent of the 2-
           year (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) education
           requirement you have completed.  As an example: 6
           months of clerical experience would be equal to 50% of
           the work experience qualification.  30 semester credit
           hours would be equal to 50% of the educational
           qualification.  Combined, they would equal 100% of the
           qualification requirement for the GS-4 grade
           level
.

BENEFITS:

Summer clerical employees are paid at the GS-1, 2, 3, or 4 level, based on their level of education at the time they apply.  If the appointment is for 90 days or more, the employee earns annual and sick leave at the rate of four hours per bi-weekly pay period plus paid Federal holidays during the period worked.  Paid employees contribute to Social Security.

All summer employees assigned to Washington, D.C. and using public transportation are eligible for the Metrochek Transit Benefit program that helps to defray the cost of traveling to and from work via public transportation.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Transportation to and from Washington is the responsibility of the employee.
